Peat backdrops was created by Jake
Has anyone thought of using peat to make backdrops?

Well I have :P  , and i'm in the process of making my 3rd one.
Yesterday is the first time I'm testing it out in cage setup with a spider.
I have also made a big one, I'm just letting it dry out a bit.

From the the ones I have done and testing of it, it seems as it will work, the biggest issue that comes in now, can one let the peat become bone dry or must it stay moist, if that is the case then it becomes something one needs to maintain and keep an eye on it.
Can one make it for the larger spiders or only for the smaller spiders?
Only for arboreals?
Will larger spider be able to climb on it with out falling off and taking chunks out of the "Peatdrop" :silly:
And then the biggest question, how big can you go, whats I'm seeing the bigger (height and width) you go, the thicker you need to make the peat, no this becomes a whole new ball game.

topicsucks , Of cause I will post pictures, just need to take them first. whistle2

This should be interesting. ...
Like you said, biggest problem might be the spider falling off as a result of the peat coming off.

Anothet thread to definitely bookmark.
Thanks

As I said, I did take some photo's but they did not come out as i would of liked, these are the best that I did take.
The smaller tank was washed and cleaned and when it dried it has start like marks on the glass.
Think it might have been the water I used as I used the borehole to clean the tanks out.

So this is my first attempt that I was speaking about.

I have thought of doing this, but I needed inspiration.

Do you use a non toxic water based binder or a sugar water based diy mix.

My only concern was the binding to the glass. You don't want the backdrop to "drop". And you want to be able to remove it if you want to.

It is just plan water and peat.
The peat is flooded and compressed in the tank, then excess water drained out and then misted again.
I have used peat to stop prey item from going behind my back drops by pushing peat between the glass and desgin, eventually it dries like a rock.

I did think of methods as you have suggested but then it starts getting messy.

There is binding agent used for tiling outside, when it dries it is non toxic, but it gets messy and the amount you have to use to get the peat to stick together.

I have also thought about using kabab sticks to build a supporting structure inside the cage, with some kind of canter lever coming out at the bottom of the tank to hold the peat up, then you just add the peat in the same method I have done.

I'm trying it out to see if it is worth while project to be used for ones spiders.
