...and the story continues, and is getting better...
This past weekend, I noticed new babies in the one females nest. The slings from the egg case described in my previous post have hatched and have been "released" from the egg case by the female. These new babies are tiny, yet well fed.
What still fascinates me is that they are living with their sub adult siblings, which are all still living with their surrogate mother that produced the egg case. There are adult males also sharing this nest.
The baby and sub adult shown in this picture are related, but the big spider is not the mother. The mother of this sling is inside her nest, obviously with the rest of her offspring.
One of the other females that lives about 70cm away is now also on an egg case. This was produced about two weeks ago. Soon, there will be two nests with newly hatched slings. I have not noticed any other egg cases, but it is possible that there is a third somewhere. The tell tale signs of a third female with eggs are about 15cm away, but I am unable to see into that third nest. I will only know for sure if slings appear.
There is no way I will be able to harvest some babies without breaking the entire communal, which I am not willing to do. We'll see...
