Advice on some ideas! was created by Eddie
Hi Guys

I am looking at two new T's. I want one burrowing and one Arboreal Tarantula.

The burrowing i was looking at Cobalt blue or a H.gigas. i really like the look of the blue T's and the H.gigas is also really a beaut that can swim and be communal or are there any other which you guys could recommend.

The Arboreal Tarantulas i am looking at are Singapore blue, Antilles pinktoe are there any other Arboreal that you guys could suggest.

Your help would be appreciated

Regards

Eddie

I am not sure about the best borrowing types of T's

But if you looking at aboreal and willing to add an old world, I'd suggest any pokie, I know a few would agree with me on this, the question is just what pokie to get, which will be any of your Poecilotheria's types.

Hi Ed and welcome.

You can (obviously) do as your heart desires, but keep in mind that the venom of most of the old world tarantulas packs quite a punch when compared to milder new world tarantulas. Then you also get temperament or, if I stick my hand in there to change out the water or pick up a bolus with the tweezer, what are the chances of getting tagged.

So based on this:
For many keepres new to the wonderful world of T's the best terrestrial option is a new world. Something in the genus Brachypelma, Lasiodora sp. Nhandu sp. or better yet, Grammostola sp.
Most of these are calm, make brilliant display spiders and grow from big to huge.
Haplopelma lividium (cobalt blue) have a nasty reputation for not being so good with the anger management and for being a pet hole. H gigas only slightly less so.

Same counts for arboreal. You can never go wrong with Avicularia sp. Personally I'm not overly fond of them for some reason : /
For something very close have a look at Tapinauchenius sp. I have several. They are feisty, have loads of character and weaker venom. Or if you're more adventurous, have a look at Psalmopoeus sp.

Good luck!

I'm not impossible. I'm being improbable.

Firstly, what is your experience level with tarantulas?

Secondly, both "burrowing" Ts that you selected are mildly aggressive in my opinion and for your arboreals, The Lapropelma violaceopes(Singapore Blue) is also wuite aggresive and grows huge, The avicularia Versicolor(Antilles pinktoe) is reputed to be very hard to keep as then tend to drop dead for no appaprent reason at all.

So what I suggest in getting for the terrestrial is one of the sp. of Brachypelma, Grammostola or even a Cyriocosmus! (They are a dwarf specie but truly make some awesome webbed tunnels and are not aggressive at all - view the forums online shop ;) )

As for an awesome arboreal, Id recommend an Avicularia avicularia(Common pinktoe) firstly because its a lot cheaper that a versi and a lot hardier! Best started arboreal in my opinion :) As also previously stated by Marius , the Tapinauchenius sp are also alot of fun ;) I have Tapinauchenius cupreus (Violet Tree Spider) avail. PM meif your keen

Otherwise, you can do what you want! My first arboreal was a P.regalis kungfu

Choose well!

As we don't know experience levels and personal preference etc I'll just tell you about my personal favourites.

Burrower, my personal favourite would be B.boehmei. In my experience hey grow quite fast, spend plenty time in the open and start to show their colours quite early. Then also they are totally relaxed like pretty much all brachypelma but they eat well.

Arboreal, my personal favourite is p.irminia (which was also my first arboreal). Eats well, spends a lot of time perched up on his tree stump and the colouring is awesome. Only thing is they fast. But then so are all arboreals and as far as my nerves are concerned there is little to no difference between FAST and VERY FAST.

Here is a thread I started when I got my first arboreal. Some interesting reading:

Why not make a shortlist and get one of each :P

Sometimes I think my sole purpose in life is to serve as a warning to others
