Hello hi, newbie here :P

Always been a fan of our furry friends and I've finally decided to get one, but it seems my dreams will remain just that, unless I move out of Cape Town, it seems?

I phoned the Cape Nature place up and spoke to a lady who firstly, didnt sound interested in talking to anyone, and when I mentioned the word Tarantula, she nearly died...Seriously? Moving on....She said she'll only be able to email me the legal document stating why i cant have a T, she cant explain it to me?
I'm really frustrated; I'm a huge animal lover, especially the exotic kind. I dont want it for show, or to make money out of or for whatever absurd reason. Yes believe it, I, a young lass of the Mother City would actually like to keep a spider.

Tell me there is hope? Should i just brush it off and stand the chance of being "prosecuted" for a pretty T? I mean, wth? There's a few shops around here and private individuals who own a T or two...Are they generally just taking a chance?

Is it really illegal, if so - why? Why only in Cape Town? Why, if it is illegal can one still apply for a permit?

Lost i am. I have read a topic or two but they havent really answered my Q's.
Ill greatly appreciate any feedback you have.

Adios
Bee

Hi

I'm also from Werstern Cape Oudtshoorn, in the whole WC T's are illegal or black listed I also love spiders and creepy crawly's. I have some snakes and just to get them on permit is already a hassle.

If you'd wan't a T in WC you'd have to be a zoological facility that is the only legal way.

As far as I understand we are aloud to legally keep a rain spider but i'm not 100% sure of that.

The laws of WC makes me want to move so desperately its not even funny.

Hope this help a bit.

regards

I thought it was only certain species that weren't allowed to be kept in WC, until sunday when Echodive informed me it's illegal to keep any T there.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like it will be changing soon which is a real pitty because what they dont realise is we dont just look after them, we succesfully breed them and increase their numbers drastically.

As Snakekid says, you'll hav one hell of a time trying to get a licence/permit or trying to change their minds.

Welcome to the forums anyway.

Cheers :)

Hi Bee_C and welcome to the forum

The short answer is that it is illegal to keep T's in the Western Cape.

It's true that there's a few individuals that keeps T's there but they mostly keep to themselves

and don't advertise the fact that they do keep T's.

At the end of the day its your own choice if you want to get one or not but if you do keep it hush hush

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying go and get one seeing as that would be breaking the law ;)

That's why I would never move there :silly: Bunch of redneck Tarantula haters

I'm happy in bobbejaansberg ;)

Thanks for the feedback and answers guys, and the hints ;)

Sucks though, as a kid growing up, we had baboon spiders living in our pool when we drained it for Summer! they were "mine"

Anyway, i know "where to go" from here. Agreed @ Creator - Redneck T haters!
We'll love them <3

You are allowed to keep all local spiders other than spiders from Theraphosidae family.
This includes wolf spiders, rain spiders, etc.
No exotic tarantulas are allowed to be kept.
