Hello knowledgable tarantula freaks.
A question regarding my H. mianx's little foot problem.

A short background:

She was purchased as a mated female roughly 18 months to 2 years ago from a VERY reputable and trusted breeder/seller in perfect health.
she unfortunately molted out after quite a few months. Her tank is more than big enough for a spider of her size (probably too small for her attitude tho) but she managed to squeeze herself into her burrow and ended up with her two front legs bent at the tips. I know this is nothing to worry about and is quite common and is "fixed" with the next molt.

The beast molted yesterday :happy: and her left leg 1 is perfectly fine but her right leg 1 is a little peculiar looking:
The pic was taken about 20 minutes after her molt.



I dont really know what to make of that? more importantly, is it anything to worry about?

What fungus problem did you have with your enclosure? :spider:

She is still stunning...regardless of the tarsus. Would really like some clarity though.

Re: Fungus. From I Just Sterilized... : "Mold, in and of itself, is seldom a problem. It's major importance is that wherever mold can grow, so can a whole host of other nasties. Mold is a harbinger of bad things to come.

Mold does not grow in a dry cage. If you have mold, you're usually keeping your cage too damp. Be advised that there are only two care groups of tarantulas that require a damp cage: the babies, and the swamp dwellers."

The Haplopelma, all reports to the contrary notwithstanding, are NOT swampers. They'll adjust quite nicely to an arid cage. Just keep H. lividum on deep enough substrate to allow it to burrow, and water it once every week or 10 days be pouring a quarter to third cup of room temperature tap water down its burrow. All the others will thrive in the same sort of cage as the Aphonopelma and Brachypelma.

I've seen the condition you illustrate several times. I have no idea what causes it. In the few instances I've followed, the condition corrects itself over the next molt or two. To illustrate this, please post a photo of the same tarantula with its leg after it molts the next time.


In the interim, you can nickname your little 7-7/8-legged buddy "Gimpy."
