Hallo everyone. I decided to start planning for some upcoming rehousings for some of my small juvenile T's. shouting As I have access to free offcuts of PVC pipe, i decided to incorporate the PVC as hides for my T's.

Since I am aiming for a natural setup, I glued some dried coco husk to the pieces of PVC. It really looks great but....

The smell (most likely Formaldehyde) :reallysick: of the glue I used (Ponal Cold (Wood) Glue - Water Resistant type) has not dissipated yet and this after a i glued a week ago.

Is this glue suitable for the application - or should I have gone with aquarium silicone? Any advice will be appreciated.

I have never built any myself, but from what I have seen the guys tend to use the silicone. ...
Also smells for a few days, but seems to dissipate after a few days.

I'm not sure if you talking about wood glue or some other kind of glue, I think you have used some other kind of glue which is not wood glue especially the fact that you have glued on PVC piping, glue has to be strong to stick to PVC piping, the water proof wood glue is non-toxic and does not have a strong odor and would not have stuck to PVC piping.

I must say, when I checked the PVC hides this morning, the smell was a lot better. I think if I leave it for another couple of days it should be fine. After roughing up the surface of the PVC the glue adhered very well to the coco peat and PVC.

I will have a look at the MSDS to see if there are any volatile substances released after application.

Ok, I have and do use the same glue for my designs and I have not experienced a strong odor before.
My designs gets painted or grouted once it has stood for a day or longer, so I might just not have noticed the smell.

The only thing you must do now, is some tests on the hides, like misting, soaking and exposing the designs to harsh elements ( the worst case, overkill) that one would get inside a tank.


Let the hides sit out in the sun for a couple of days, this will make sure it dries and the smell should dissipate, then to be sure put it into a empty tank with the lid on and do a smell test again, if the smell is still there rather try silicone.
Most products are safe to use with spiders, but only if there is not odar or a taste left behind.
