Leg regeneration was created by oceanblue
Hi Spidey freinds,

I am hoping somebody can explain this to me.
How do spiders regenerate their legs? If they lose a leg, then moult, where is the new leg; is it folded under the old skin?

Please help, this is bugging me quite a bit.

Cheers
OB

Hi

A new leg forms in the old coxal cavity.
There's little space in the coxa,so the leg is extremely folded and compacted internally. That also explains why the leg is thinner and smaller.
Hope this helps

Rainer Foelix' new edition of Biology of Spiders (ISBN 0199734828) covers this quite nicely with illustrations and a detailed description. You can get the book at your local neighborhood library through the Interlibrary Loan Service or its equivalent.

For the hardcore enthusiasts in the readership, it's also available by special order through just about all local and Internet bookstores. You've GOT to get this book!

Here are some links that describe it, but you may have trouble getting these to ship to S.A. Maybe somone else can recommend a better source for you.
