Stinky roaches was created by chrystal
I have a tank full of hissing roaches that I'm trying to breed. They've been reproducing just fine but my problem is that they stink to high hell! I cleaned the tank out on friday but by yesterday the smell had gotten so bad that I want to gag if I come anywhere near the tank, it's like something died in there. I've seen other colonies of hissers that are much larger than mine and don't seem to have a smell at all, what am I doing wrong. I feed them oranges, dog pellets, cricket gutloader and water chrystals. Their food is placed on a lid in the tank to make it easier to clean and feed.

I'm not using any substrate. I did find a dead one yesterday but I tossed it immediately. I've ordered another 50 adults for next week but I want to resolve the smell issue before I get them.

Can you maybe post a pic of your Roach colony setup ..

How much ventilation do you have ?.
What have you given them to hide in ?.
how much moisture is in the tank ? if any.

What is the cricket gutloader consisit of ?.

you can use wood chips as substrate or oats even newspaper .
this gives the babies places to hide also helps the pee to be shocked up and hides the poo ..

Okay I think the problem was that I didn't have enough ventilation, after leaving the lid off for a while the smell seems alot better.

I keep egg cartons stacked on their side for hiding.

I'm not sure what is in the gutloader it just says that it's high in protein & fiber with added calcium.

There's no moisture except on some days when the temperature is much higher.

I'll add some newspaper till I can get wood chips.

Thanks for the help :)
