noob

Hi everybody

I am new to the site, but I was wondering how reliable coloration sexing is on the pokies. I have the following 3 pokies: Indian Ornamental, Fringed Ornamental and Sri Lanka Ornamental. They all are adults/semi-adults and the christmas tree is light in color. I have seen a few comments that the males have a dark line in the christmas tree? Is there any value in this?

Welcome to the forum.
Give us an introduction about yourself.

Yes, that is true, you can sex pokies from color on their dorsal pattern.
And yes, the darker the inside pattern goes, means it is going to be male.

Your scientific names for your spiders.
Poecilotheria regalis (Indian Ornamental)
Poecilotheria ornata (Fringed Ornamental)
Poecilotheria fasciata (Sri Lankan ornamental)

Some thing like this Poecilotheria ornata

Good evening Cascade

Thank you so much for your reply!

Sorry about the common names! I get so confused by all the scientific names and find it easier sometimes using the common names. I have around 75 T's including allot of slings from my Curly female. She guarded that sack with her life and opened it herself. I was amazed by the size of the babies coming from that thing!

I started a year ago on my hobby and love my T's. I work full time at U.P as a lecturer and I am busy with my Masters Degree. I love the pokies the most followed by the old world species. I just find it very sad that we are unable to keep species like the King Baboon or OBT's. All these guys from the US and UK own these rare species and it makes me ill!!!!!!

Can you direct me to the best places to look for good deals on T's? Currently I am just watching Gumtree and Junkmail, but there must be other places? I am looking for good deals all the time and currently I am searching for a Gooty Sapphire Ornamental at a reasonable price. They are so pricey at present!

Once again thanks for your prompt reply

You can try these online shops, they are all trusted and all have decent prices.
Tarantulacafe.co.za - hendrik
Petbug.co.za - Tim and Mandie
Mrtarantula.co.za - Jozua
We have the classifieds section on the forum as well.

Not a problem with regards to the scientific names just yet, You will get the hang of it.
Well after your masters degree is done you can learn all of these Updated Scientific names. :deal

There are couple people who feel the same way, we can't even keep our own local spiders
But, hopefully we will be able to get our local spiders on permits, hoping and preying still!?!

Wow, so you have even experienced the breeding side of the hobby.
It is something amazing how they look after the sack, and when they stand above their little slings running around them!

I was just wondering

Has any progress been made on obtaining permits for keeping Baboon species yet? I see the letter written by nature conservation is quite old!

I wonder if it would help contacting them directly? shouting

Welcome to the forum.

There is truth to the line on the abdoman but in some of your more rare species you cant use it as an indication. I think Dave touched on this a while ago.

I recently sexed one of my P formosas (over 10cm) and was happy to find that its a female, yet the line on the abdoman is dark.

I would say you are relatively safe using that method on the regalis, ornata and fasciata when they are bigger in size but ultimately the best method is by sexing the exuvium.
