Some advice!? was created by Laurence
Hi all :)

I'm new to the forum and will be posting in the 'introduce yourself' section too, but for now I'm needing some advice asap!

I'm new to tarantula keeping and got a baby Honduran curly hair to start with. I put a small piece of bark in her enclosure for her to hide under - anyway, she has spent the past few days burrowing under it and has now completely closed herself in! Not sure what to do about feeding!? :(

Any advice would be great!

Curly slings are known to dig and burrow a good deal.

If you would like to try feeding, feed a cricket or roach that is no bigger than the size of the Tarantula's body, in other words the distance from the fangs in front to the spinnerets at the rear, in fact prey smaller than this is better (if it's a sling, but if it's quite large already just feed anything that it can handle easily), and chuck it in with your T. If the food is still there the next day, take it out and try again in about a week.

What you need to watch out for is that T's sometimes close themselves in so they can molt, and you don't want live prey wandering around that could harm your T in the middle of a molt. It could also be burrowing because it just wants to feel a bit more comfortable with its surroundings before it ventures out and about. A good supply of food is a nice way to make your T feel at home :)

I got my Curly last week - she is a bit bigger (almost an adult).

She also spent the first three or four days hiding. Today was the first time that she actually came out during the day.

My advice is KISS (keep it simple stupid) This is my motto for everything I do. Don't over think things. put food in that is a little smaller than your T. and watch to see if food is eaten. I find crickets best, but everyone is different. Spidey will eat when hungry, they will leave the burrow when they are ready and sometimes pull the food into the burrow. Don't stress is the best advice on spiders I was ever given.

Thanks for all the advice guys :) The prob was that she totally covered herself in with no burrow entrance!!! Anyway, after a few days she made an entrance at one end of the bark - so all good :)
