In the picture you see my 11cm N.chromatus in a threat pose. I've posted about this T before (N.chromatus from hell) but this was really different.

I needed to do some maintenance in the enclosure so i shooed him around a bit with a brush, to which he responded with the usual snapping and posing. Once he was out the way i put a perspex sheet down the middle of the tank to seperate him from the area where i am working. To this he again responded with a pose, however this time he did not settle down.

I decided to leave the other half of the tank rather than chase him around again seeing as he was obviously not happy but even after i had finished working and closed the tank he kept his pose for no less than 1hour and 20mins after closing the tank. I happened to see him settle down as i was sitting at my desk about 2m away.

Has anyone else seen this before? Is it normal?

The more I read about the N chromatus, the more I have to agree that they are sent from hell.

I also have one that measures about 12cm now. Looks like a male (still not sure). Last night the little fella was sitting on the side of the glass, for some odd and freaky reason, when I came closer to inspect my other T's, it decided to go into the thread position while vertically on the glass (about 10cm from the peat was the lowest part of its body). I have never witnessed anything like this before. It also stayed in the position for a good 30min.

Couldn't take any proper photos as I don't own a proper camera and the cell phone camera just didn't do the trick.

So maybe they just like being all defensive and "nasty".

@maxxxieee - Don't think he's near a molt, I haven't seen any behavioural changes and he's eating like it's his last. Fed him again last night. Not even sure he will have another molt, or if it's a he for that matter.

@Uncle Charlie - So it seems these extended threat displays are quite standard. Not sure if that's good news

Anyways, all yesterday he was marching around his tank pausing at random spots for a few minutes. Not a confirmed male but perhaps he's looking for some action? ;)

Self defence, is sometimes normal. :P

I have A. geniculata would would flip on her back and she would stay like that for 20mins after I had closed the lid.

I would say, the spider can't see you any more, so it just stays like that until decides to go back to normal, until it is safe!

If he is not mature he would not have any need for action ;)
