So, today I heard a commotion outside with the labour.

Turns out they were fighting over who gets to keep the tortoise they picked up and cook for soup which, apparently, grants you the lifespan bouns +10 perk.

I said to myself "deafaq?!", donned my tights and cape and rescued the poor critter with Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" going in the background.

Before releasing it though, I'd like to remove some of the ticks it is covered in. Any ideas on how to safely remove them with the least stress to the animal?

My mom says that it is always safer to burn them off, that leaves less mouthparts in the Tortoise. Don't know if it works, never tried it myself.

Burning ticks off does not sound like a nice thing to do with an animal.

We had a tortoise that was covered in red ants, used dettol, diluted in water, and washed the the affected area with the detail solution.


I would suggest phoning you local vet and ask them what you should do.

Take a some vodka on an ear bud and smear the tick with it for a while. Keep him soaked for about two mins. Then wiggle it by moving your finger tip around it. Keep circling the tick until it lets go. You can then laugh at the drunk tick for a few mins before squashing it

Frontline the bastards! I have used frontline countless times to remove mites from my pythons. It really works like a charm. Despite it extremely strong odor the reptiles are not fazed and I was told to even rub the frontline over the eyes. I was doubtful but it worked. Yes, tortoises don't have sheddable eye caps like snakes so leave that area alone. I'm just saying that frontline works like a charm!
You can only get it at Vet shops or from a vet tho. Spray it onto a paper towel and rub the tortoise clean. It kills them mites/ticks/fleas on contact.

Called the local vet. They suggested Frontline.

Checked on SAReptile forum and it seems to add up.
