I agree with Hendrijs post. 1st instar is the spiders 1st proper MOLT... The transformation from an egg to eggs with legs is not classified as a molt.

1st instar is when you can see the spiders proper arachnid shape... Where as eggs with legs looks like... Well... Eggs with legs?

I think the major confusion comes in here.
In Tai-rantula's post, the spider has gone from egg to eggs with legs (Without moulting)
Then in Hendriks post, the eggs with legs have gone from eggs with legs to eggs with legs by moulting (You can see the moult attahed to the back of the spiders). They still look like eggs with legs which is why we call them eggs with legs (Myself included), but they should in actual fact be 1st instars.
Hendrik's pictures should actually then be named 1st instar, 2nd instar and 3rd instar (According to Stan)
In the above case most spiders will only start feeding at 3rd instars then.

Now the question is which way do we go?
I have always called both eggs with legs stages "eggs with legs", but we should actually change. Suppose we just have to decide on a standard.

According to RobC in this Video:

Eggs with legs just have a little piece of "skin?" that falls off their abdomen and that is how it goes to a normal arachnid shape... It is not a true molt, it is rather a MERGE!!! Not a molt... a MERGE.

Then they molt after that and it is 1st instar, 2nd instar and so on. 2nd instar is when they start darkening, get some hair, look older etc.

Hope that clears things up!

Why all the SHOUTING?! Is something making you angry?

Surely a piece of skin that falls off the spider is considered moulting?
I still call it eggs with legs, but not sure if that is exactly correct.
Oh well. :)

As much as RobC is a great hobbyist and I love the info he gives, maybe Stan has a bit more experience on the subject with a few books behind his name. :)

In the end, I suppose it doesn't really make a lot of difference, as long as when you are talking about selling 2nd instrs for example, you explain that they are eating, etc.
