Hi guys, I found this rain spider last year around august and since then it obviously hasnt been in contact with a male... recently she got really plump and I assumed she was just gnna molt. I was wrong, got back from school and she seemed very skinny and is sitting on a ball of web. Here are pics:






My question is, how is it possible that she has been 'pregnant' all this time and now she only makes an egg sac...

I believe spiders can even molt after mating and still lay an eggsac. I am not certain if that is an eggsac but I would say it is very possible for the rain spider to have mated before being captured by you and thus she was waiting for the right conditions (food, temp, humidity etc) to drop the egg sac.

It is an egg case.
I have hatched out 10+ rain spider egg cases over the years.
They usually mate quite soon after mating and then wait till "late" in their lives to start laying eggs.
After laying her 1-3 egg cases she will die unfortunately.
These spiders do not moult after maturity (Males and females)

I gather you know pretty much almost all the tricks, can you please help me out... How long will I have to wait? should I be giving moisture? Im thinking of turning the enclosure away from the open side of my room so she isnt disturbed by activity or any brightish light... I will be very sad if she dies because she is the first spider I started to look after and study. But I guess I knew she was mature from her size. But hopefully the sac will produce some babies and some will stay with me and the rest to the wild

Bred my last batch 5 years or so ago, so cant remember the duration.
As for moving her, rather just leave her as she is. I have never had them eating their egg cases before, so they are pretty low maintenance when it comes to breeding.
If possible, try get 2 handfuls of dry leaves into her enclosure. She will use these to build the nursery for her slings when they hatch.
You can spray a bit of water on her to drink. The egg case is waterproof, so it wont matter if it gets a bit wet.
Unfortunately they dont moult after maturing like tarantulas do, so her time on earth is short.

the thing is, if they hatch out in her current enclosure they can get out through the gaps on the door probably.... LOL might have to tape all the gaps up, there is a nice big vent ontop so its not like there will be no air...
