Tarantula vs Palystes sp.

Why is the Palystes sp.(rain spider) classified as a spider and not a tarantula?
My Palystes sp. (20cm) is larger than any tarantula I have ever seen... Hopefully I'll see a bigger T soon

The animal is right by saying palystes are true spiders.
True spiders fall into the sub order Araneomorphae.
Tarantulas are in the sub order Mygalomorphae(used to be Orthognatha), more primitive
spiders.
The main differences between the two,
Mygalomorph spiders have paraxial chelicerae and 2 pairs of booklungs.
Araneomorph spiders have diaxial chelicerae and 1 pair of booklungs.
Size has nothing to do with it, just look at Cyriocosmus spp.
As for your spider being 20cm, that would be a record by some margin!
I kept a few Rain spiders many years ago and what I thought was an
exceptional female only measured around 13cm.
If you can post pics, please do. That size is hard to believe

Yeah I had it all wrong...The spider is 11.5cm.
I decided to measure the spider as best I could so I went to my workshop and found some workshop paper. Each big block is 1cm x 1cm.
Maybe we should use this as a spider measuring standard when taking photos of them. If you cant find this paper then make it by drawing a 1cm x 1cm grid on plain white paper.
