Hi

I am considering getting an Avicularia geroldi.

Anyone with experience with this species that care to share?
Is R340 for ~3cm sling a good price?
Is it a good size to start with considering Avics finicky care regime and ease of dying?

I am also considering getting a 1.5cm Avic versicolor from the same person.
He sent me a list of what he has on offer, so I am picking what I like.

Hi Robbie

SARoachman still has some listed on his site.
www.saroachman.co.za/tarantulas

I am just scared of getting a 1cm sling as they die very easily.
Looking for slightly larger.

The person selling the A geroldi has 1.5cm versicolor slings for R310.
Contact information: chad.conradie@telkomsa.net
His name is Christo.

Hey :)

I thing that it's a good price and a good size.
You should be fine as far as avic mortality goes.
Sometimes they just die without any reason.
We refer to it as SADS = Sudden Avic death sindrome.

When life gives you lemons, wing them right back and add some lemons of your own.

Unless the Avics were guaranteed bred in SA, they will have been 'imported'. Ask for some reliable proof that they were locally bred. The 1.5cm versi is very risky too. Don't be surprised if they keel over and die. It's winter, the coldest one in 15yrs, and it's not really a good idea to invest in tiny Avic slings at this time of year.

As a matter of interest, I was recently selling some Avics which were just under juvie size for not very much more than what you're paying for the geroldi sling of only 3cm, so, IMO R340 for any smuggled 3cm Avic sling is a total rip off. Unless it comes with a 3 month guarantee.

The problem with smuggled Avics is they aren't (usually) fed when they hatch at the breeder overseas. They are shipped off around the world at a couple of weeks old, and their moults get interrupted and because of the very cramped conditions and lack of correct conditions during their long voyage to SA, they end up dying sooner or later because they cannot moult properly and they haven't had proper nutrition.

Thanks Tango
I am agree. I am very scared to get the versi because it is so cold and because it is so small.

I will wait a bit on the versi then. :D

Could you perhaps send me a list of what you have for sale? I am definitely looking for an avic to add to me collection end of this month.
Originally I had my mind dead set on an A versi, but since doing some additional research, I realized that they all have something special about them (like most Ts).
