Just a quick one here for all the photographic experts.

I am currently looking at getting a Macro lens for my Camera, currently using a Canon 450 D , what lens would you recommend that i look at without breaking the bank and selling a kidney.
I have looked at the, Sigma 105mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro. Would this be sufficient .

Thanks in advance

I'm no expert in taking photo's and equipment, but I would rather buy a dedicated macro lense.

We have a Sigma 70 - 300mm F4-5.6 DG macro lense and I'm not very impressed with the macro side of the lense, it takes good photo's but you have to have the camera mounted on the tri pod and keep it focused on a certain spot to take photo's.

Also the changing back and forward from macro makes it a bit of a pain.

But I would advise to go and test the lense before you buy it and see if it will work for you.

Look at the 60mm Macro Lens from Canon. It's designed for crop sensor cameras which really helps getting crisp shots compared to a full frame lens on a crop body especially if you don't intend spending another R6k on a Macro flash. Not going to explain the technical reasons for this here but it's to do with the effective focal lengths.

I have both a 60mm and 100mm Macro, so I have first hand experience with both.

PS I am selling my 60mm Macro for cheap to fund a flash. ;-)

Have any of you ever considered a Panasonic? One of those basic auto digital cameras. Have a look and you will be surprised at the quality.

Konrad and Dimitri, thanks for the responses.

@ Dimitri, I currently have a Canon 450 D SLR and would prefer to upgrade this platform going forward. I have a smaller canna but am not happy with the quality.

@ Konrad. Yes a dedicated Macro is the way I want to go, however Canon products cost Kidneys that is why i was looking at the Sigma range , would a 100mm macro not be better than a 60mm or have I got this mixed up,

Thanks again for the comments
