Something my niegbour asked me the other day and to be honest I have never really thought about it.

He had phoned me at 17:00 to meet him at the fence to give me a spider (baboon spider) he had found in he's house, which he thought it might be one of mine that had escaped. It was a MM baboon spider.

He asked a couple of question on how they live where do they come from and things like that.
Then he asked me, what about veld fires, as the fire will suck all the oxygen out of the burrow.

As I said, I have not really thought about this before, but as spiders (tarantulas and baboon spiders) don't require much oxygen to survive I don't think anything should happen to them?

If it is a run away fire it just sweeps over the veld grass with speed, if it slow burning, no wind then it might be a different story.

He also asked about the heat of the ground.

What does every one else think would happen?

Depends on how deep down the spider is I would think. I think the soil insulates the spider, protecting it from the intense heat, and I doubt oxygen is a problem.

It's a bit late to think logically so will formulate a proper response in the morning

At a guess I would think they would be unaffected deep inside their burrow....
