Correct Spydaman, if I remember correctly this sp. is native to Australia, the picture was actually taken in Queensland.

Thats just scary... seriously...

as much as the second photo is photoshopped, these spiders do have the ability to take on small birds - that looks like a finch - and we do have the same genus in SA (golden orb web) which has been documented taking on small birds caught in their web.

That picture is also a bit misleading as the bird is smaller than you might think. It did happen in Australia and inside an aviary. The owner keeping the birds was not to happy after discovering this.

It is exactly as Scorpion said, our Golden Orb Web spider comes from the same family and ours do get nice and big as well. If I remember correctly they use another one of this family in Japan for spider fighting (non-lethal) and the spiders lives freely inside the owners house with a big web somewhere in a corner and no cage.
