hi its a garden orb web sipder i think. they are often found in gardens with very large webs. Similar to a golden orb web.

The spider is a Araneidae Argiope sp.
Its a female (As the males are tiny and don't have the typical abdomen shape)
Harmless.
They build orb webs with cool zig zags in the web (stabilimentum)

we also have a place in ct and are seeing a lot of them at the moment in the fynbos. The famale is much larger than the male. They live for around a year and the female makes a beautiful egg sack which looks like a ball of cotton wool. She places the sack at the top of a bush and the little slings use the wind to disperse themselves once big enough.
