Funny enough there was a legislation passed at Cope 17, where any new house that is going to be built has to have curtain R factor (energy saving) so cavities walls, polystyrene in the cavities, double glazed windows, think pink in the ceilings and the list goes on.

I use Polystyrene in my spider room window, keeps allot more heat in, also thick blankets or curtains will also stop the cold from coming through.

There are allot of was to keep your house warm and save on power, the main thing is to get rid of drafts, that is main factor is cooling a house down, also big windows.
There are a whole lot of products on the market that are energy saving.

The tick is to keep your room warm as well as it looking neat.

@ cascade but covering your windows in polystyrene is the best... but then your room it dark 24/7 which is bad for spiders....

I remove the sheets in the morning and put it back in the evening around 18:00, also I can remove half the sheet and leave the other half so it allows some light into the room.
I only use it for night time, as that is when it is the coldest in the evening and early hours of the morning.
Same as where the spiders are know, I close the curtains at night and open them up after the sun stops shining through the window.
But at the end of the day, keeping the heat at a constant in the room is far more important to me, than 8 hours of light.

Egg trays also give plenty energy saving and sound proofing, but does not look so nice.
