Afternoon all

Don't normally get to see owls during the day as they are normally sleeping in a tree some where.

I was lucky enough to see this one parking in the tree in the yard, seems to have he's times mixed up.


We have plenty owls in our area, they also hang around the house.
Sometimes at night you hear a massive thump on the roof and then you hear screaming of something that has been caught by the owls.

Not sure what it is but think it is a barn owl.
Here are some pictures.
It would sit still for a bit look at me and then fly off to another branch.

Awesome, think that you are very fortunate to have these around.
I love predator birds, but have only small hawks around my hood that I see.

You right, it is a privilege to have them around.
We have eagles that live close to where my gran stays, which is about 5km from us.
We have falcons that you see every now and then.
And so far there is 2 species of owls, the one in the picture and a smaller one.

They have never stayed around long enough to get a nice picture or been out during the day.

I have always loved birds of prey, I was going to help a guy who was a falconer in my area with flying he's birds, that did not happen as he moved away.

But again, one needs permits to be able to keep our local birds of prey.

Helped an owl recover many years back, when still in school.
But if there's so many birds of prey around you, it's easy to keep them there.
Just build a perch at the right height and facing the right direction.
Birds of prey don't leave a nest that easy, and a lot of them mate for life.

Wow such pretty photos!
We see a ton of birds of prey around our house.mwe live right by monte casino and the bird park encourages their birds to hunt naturally. We often get apology phone calls from them too since they hunt my dads racing pigeons and you can track the rings they wear. I still have to go fetch a jar of pigeon rings that there birds leave behind in their cages.

Hehe, this is a spotted eagle owl. (kaapse gevlekte ooruil)(Bubo africanus). They are stunning owls. We had some breed at our school in Cape Town a thousand years a go when I was still in primary school. Hehe. Nah im not that old. Barn owl is the very whitish one with the mohawk between the eyes.
