I found these two scorps on my brother's plot here in Zululand. They were hiding in the firewood and made run for it when we put it on the fire, I took them in before someone tries to kill them.

But now I am worried that they could be illegal to keep so I need some help to ID them. Both are about 4-5cm at this stage.

The 1st scorpion is some kind of burrowing scorpion maybe ohisthacanthus sp. may not keep them with out a permit.

The bottom scorpion is a uroplectus sp you may keep them.

I can't give exact names, maybe F1refly can help out here, he is pretty clued up with scorpions

A quick google search does confirm that you are probably correct on both accounts! Well I guess I will release the first guy back into the wild this weekend. Will try find a spot where he will not be disturbed.

Hopefully F1refly also spots this thread to confirm, but pretty sure you are correct.

1st looks closest to Cheloctonus jonesii and according to distribution are found near Jozini (plot about 50km away) and are almost black in colouration in kzn.
2nd looks closest to Uroplectes variegatus

Okay, top one I have no idea, however the bottom one is either Uroplectes formosus or U. variegatus however, I am leaning more towards U. formosus as it looks closest to that. Keep it until it moults as then it will be easier to identify as I'm sure it's colours a bit dull to it being so porcine. At that size it is either an adult, or close to it as Uroplectes are a dwarf species. I myself have three Uroplectes triangulifer and will be getting two Uroplectes carinatus at a later stage.

Top one is most definetly illegal, so release him very quickly.

I think you are correct on the 2nd being Uroplectes formosus , She actually had a batch of babies about a week ago so not sure when she will molt again...

Agreed on the 1st being illegal, planning on relocation to the same area this weekend.
