Only males get that dark colouration underneath the abdomen, so 50% chance its a male.

Good focus is everything. That also means a respectable depth of field. Too much of your photo is out of focus.

Second on the list of must-haves is good lighting. And, because of the way that optics works, that automagically will result in a greater depth of field. Too much of your photo is poorly lit.

Even in this day and age of effectively free photos, too many people take too few photos. You can always throw away the ones that didn't turn out. The trick here, however, is to vary the lighting, focus and posing conditions between each of the photos. Even if you know nothing about the art and science of photography, you are bound to get at least one good shot by pure accident if you take enough photographs.

Cell phone cameras are seldom good enough for this kind of photography. If you don't have a good enough camera, maybe borrow a friend's or family member's camera. Actually, maybe you can borrow them as the photographer for a few hours too!
