Dave, what's the idea behind using different layered substrates? Is it to hold humidity better?

I try set up my enclosures like a pot plant. The reason i put so many layers is that the earth and pebbels
is so hold water better. What this does is make it alot more humid but also makes the natural plants
grow alot better.

My Advice is mostly from my personal experience, but everyone is

The first layer is pebbles. the reason for this is that is hold water alot better. So there is high humidity in the
enclosure.

The second layer I use is a mixture eucalyptus mulch and coconut shavings. I do this because it helps
make the live plants grow. Almost like a fertilizer.

The 3rd layer is a mixture of palm peat and river sand. The reason for this that its just a common top layer of
substrate in the wild, and it looks cool. With all the live plants and diffrents colours it the enclosure, it really
highlights the colouts of your tarantula. And ever since I redid my enclosures the humidity has been awesome and
spiders are burrowing, which they never did,so its a good sign.Probably wont need heaters or heat pads for winter.

Nice enclosures!

I see people use eucalyptus oil as a natural pesticide. Do you think the shavings might have an adverse effect on the T's over time?

I'm not impossible. I'm being improbable.

I did read that, but i have had no problem with my spiders. So i think its fine. Iv also started to use alot less
of the eucalyptus.
