I have recieved a new T and after some research, found it is one of the feared species, not to be handled and be extra, extra careful with.

I have also tried to look for some information regarding this T, but not a lot is yet known regarding this T and what I have seen ( including on this forum) is mostly regarding bites ( there is a tread by Cascade) and rehousing ( there is a tread by Marius).

This is my little bit of information and a photo of Lee. Please feel free to add your 2c worth on here as I know I won't mind reading other people's opinions regarding this beautiful T.

Stromatopelma calceatum aka Feather leg baboon

Back Story: Not very common but they are out there. Extremely strong venom causing pain for several days to weeks in joints. Very painful bite.

Caging Type: Simi arboreal, but these will occupy any nook or cranny they can get into.

Humidity: Low 50 -60%

Temperament: Do not handle! Very skittish and very defensive very fast. Very does not describe it. This is the best threat display I have yet to see

Special Notes: A great deal of care should be taken with these species. They are skittish yet will aggressively defend themselves with little provocation. They do not back down from threats very often and a threat is a promise to bite not a threat. One of my favorites yet not something I play with. With movement it's like the speed of sound you won't even see it take off but you'll know it when it hits you.

Lee is still very small, just a sling still.

Thanks for the thread Lee.

Im just thinking out loud here, and maybe Dimitri has already done something like this,
But if there is a breeding or care thread a member has had success with and there is vaulable
information that can help other members, could Dimitri attach links to the TARANTUPEDIA on the
following spider?

Food for thought.

Beautiful T Viven, you've got everything pretty much correct already as far as I can tell. They also seem pretty hardy and not far more aggro than many other species (on the high side of aggro).

You can take an Aphonopelma to crickets but you can't make it eat!

Dave it a very good idea and i have thought of this. You will see some on the tarantupedia have links to awesome threads like the balfouri communal.

I have linked this post to the Stromatopelma calceatum (Featherleg Baboon) page and will link the bite report as well.

Hi.

You won't regret getting your S calceatum. Especially if you 'grow' with as you raise it from a sling.

Just a note on the rehousing: What I did there was probably a little overkill

I have since switched to the bag method . Just as effective in keeping limiting the spider's bolting abilities and much less fuss.

Enjoy!

I'm not impossible. I'm being improbable.
