I was wondering how many of you would be interested in a local tarantula club in your area?

A local club could draw in tarantula hobbyists, breeders, newbies etc who all live in the same area (like Durban, Pretoria or the Westrand). Each club can have monthly meetings / gatherings where knowledge is shared, exuviums are sexed, breeding attempts are made, pics are taken etc.

It does not have to be a formal thing, it could be a braai / potjie or whatever floats your boat.

In my opinion, local clubs would make it easier for everyone to feel part of something. In the last year we have had many awesome gatherings which many people could not attend because the venue was too far from where they stay.

People should also not be restricted to 'belong' only to clubs in their areas. If you want to attend a meeting at another club, then you should be free to do so.

Clubs could also gather for fun events like paintball.

Constructive feedback would be appreciated! :)

Clubs could work for gauteng area but to the rest of the world its gonna take a while , looking at mp or limpopo we might need to look at more than one suburb for a succesfull club, on this forum that I know off its only me in middelburg and in witbank ist only crystal a few guys in nelspruit and even fever in limpopo province ;)

You make a good point.

I think we must also keep in mind that there are hundreds (if not thousands) of tarantula keepers that do not belong to this site.

A little creative thinking will be needed to draw members to clubs in your area.

Also, a 'club' does not have to have 20 - 30 members.

I know a few tarantula keepers and breeders in other provinces that do not belong to this site. So if and when clubs kick off in their areas, I will definitely recommend that they join their local club.

Thanks Wonderpark ;)

@ Ceno,

In Pta there's the THA - Transvaal Herpetological Association, I know around our area, there's the WRHA, I've been approached a while back to get their spider section up and going, just hadn't gotten around to doing it yet.

I'll make contact with the guys again and provide you with some feedback.

Thanks Animal :)

I was thinking more along the lines of having a TARANTULA club. Something dedicated to tarantulas only. Many of us are into tarantulas but not true spiders and other creepy crawlies....?
