I would like to attempt a Hybridization experiment with Brachypelma species someday. I would never distribute the slings and would only keep about 5 to study. The rest I would destroy. I wonder what a Brachypelma Boehmei x Brachypelma Albopilosum would look like?

I would like to revive this thread. I have spent most of today in a 'light argument' with someone about inbreeding. According to him (and I quote his words), 'inbreeding messes with a T's genus'.... Jip, I also said: huh!??!
He also got opinions from people on this forum who told him that Inbreeding is very wrong and should not be done in captivity... My answer to that: the very first wild caught specimens were probably inbreds already (as inbreeding will most probably occur naturally in the wild), so logic tells me that the hobby started with inbreds, not so? In SA we have a very limited gene pool to work with, most of the juvies and older adults we have were probably imported from the same dealer at the same time (so they would probably be from the same egg sack), so most of the offspring we are producing will be inbreds, not so? And so we all buy those offspring and a few years down the line we do breeding loans (not knowing that our males and females are siblings) and we produce more inbreds. Is there something wrong with the offspring we then produce? Has anyone had slings with 9 legs and 2 horns? And please explain to me how this will 'mess with the genus'...?

I don't think that inbreeding is bad or will 'mess with the genus' ,usually when I buy slings I sometimes buy more than one of the same specie so if these slings mature and I end up with a male and female I would try my hand at breeding even thou they are siblings . The only time when the genus gets messed up is when people start cross breeding .

None of those are necessarily a bad idea. It's the reasons or logic, or lack thereof, for doing so that can make the practices a bad idea.

This subject has been hashed, rehashed, and reprocessed more than bologna lunchmeat! And, it's caused flame wars rivaling the French Revolution! You can read a lot of what's been said by using the <Search> function on this and any other forum you may be a member of with any of the terms you suggest as keywords or search strings.

You'd better put on another pot of coffee, or pour yourself another cup, glass, stein, or flagon of your favorite beverage, and clear your schedule for the next day or two. You'll have a lot of reading to do!
