I did a little search on the forums to see if this has been posted before but couldn't find anything, so hopefully this is the first.

This page is really interesting. It's a bit hard to grasp because some of it is a LOT different to how most of us would pronounce the names... For example, i've always thought it was Poh-Kee-Loh-Thi-ree-ah. But actually, it's Pee-Suh-Luh-THI-Ree-Uh... Whoops!!

Thanks for this, I found this site ages ago and then lost it. This is the site that FINALLY put my tongue to rest about how to pronounce POECILOTHERIA!

When I first read the word Poecilotheria, I pronounced it correctly (I have a decent grasp of nomenclature and pronunciation) but when I heard everyone saying that they keep "Pokies" and various youTube video with people pronouncing it Poke-il-otheria - I thought I must be wrong and started saying it that way.

Then when I found this site you just linked for us, I was pleasantly surprised to read that the way I pronounced it in the beginning was correct... pee-suh-luh-THI-ree-uh

All these names are very tricky to get right.

So true! And it's a bit scary to start pronouncing it in the correct way, because everyone is so used the 'pokie' way, (and that species is just ONE example of a very commonly and wrongly pronounced name), that you'd expect a little criticism.

Not sure how correct that document is though, if you take Ceratogyrus for example it says the pronunciation is suh-rah-tuh-JY-ruhs but this comes from the Greek words Kerato(Horn) and Gyros(Turn). So no S but K for the suh and not a Jy but Gy as in G in Greek.

I can say (JEE-guhs) for H Gigas, because I read it on the Internets, but I have had mine for only what, 3 weeks. There are folks here who have had theirs for years, had them mate, molt, swim and call them (GEE-gas), so I don't think it is that important in the end.

Not close to as confusing as the 'common' names, at least.
