Dean, I don't think you should let it scar you away from spiders, it does happen it has happened to another member on the forum.
If you love or like spiders then you should not let it put you off to much, just be careful and alert.

In any working environment you have PPE (personal protective equipment) this is what safes your life and keeps you safe.
So go and get your self some Safety glasses.

Then you ready to keep any and all flicking Tarantulas.
I have two pairs of safety glasses in my drawer and have the spray bottle at hand.

A spray bottle is another good tool to us. Set it to fine mist, as soon as a spider flicks it hairs, mist in the air and around you face and body this will stop the hairs from finding you.

Honestly, I think the bite from an OW tarantula is much worse than irritation caused by urticating hairs? !

Unless... you have excessive allergies (i.e. you swell up like HULK after a bee sting) - Then you are fooked either way, whether you possess a NW or an OW and should rather get a goldfish than a tarantula if you can't bite the bullet.

cascade, I agree, goggles are great ... and very cheap at Builders I think!

It also helps to stock up on some celestamine and eye drops and some kind of allergy ointment. I frequently get urticating hairs from T.ockerti and the itching usually subsides within 30-40 minutes.
