Hey All

So im pretty new to the tarantula world only been keeping T's for about 4 months now,

My wife bought me a Gooty ornamental ( P. Metallica), Venezuelan Suntiger ( P. Irminia) over the weekend and a Cobalt blue (Haplopelma lividum) and a Singapore blue (Lampropelma violaceopes) Arriving this week. ( I got the best wife in the world) :happy:


I am a little nervous coz my current T's are all beginner species.

It was a little scary moving the Gooty into her new home.

I Know all of the above are not for beginners but im pretty sensible and have loads of respect for them,

I have read loads about all the above T's, But no better advice then from ppl that actually cared for them for a while.

Any special advice, Things i should watch out for etc? Words of caution?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Treat them with respect and expect the unexpected, especially during feeding and rehousing.
They tend to be more flighty than bitey, so just be prepared.
My first 'tarantula' I owned was a baboon spider (years before exotic tarantulas had hit the market) and I am still fine, considering they are old world.
With respect you will have no problems.

Any re-housing of your spiders, do it out side on the lawn, this makes re-housing easy and less stressful for yourself.
The grass slows the spider down and makes it manageable.

Well, H. lividum is your pet hole, so you don't really have to worry to much about it to much.

P. Irminia are stunning spiders, they tend to be fast at times, but also will hide away when open there container.
But they are very fast to strike a defence pose.
They are awesome to feed, they enjoying catching their prey. :evilgrin:

P. metallic . I don't have experience with them as yet. but Pokies tend to run and hide, you have to really push buttons to get a pokie to give your a treat pose.

But other wise you will learn how to deal with them, if they small you will grow in experience with them!

But yes you are one lucky Guy, hope you bought some flowers and gave lots of kisses for those spiders!? :kiss: :blush:

The best advice I could give is that you should be prepared to end up with a spider on your face one time or another

I had this little experience again last night Unluckily I was alone so no photo :igiveup:

When you keep these spiders know that they are fast and that they do jump without hesitation.

Anybody else had this experience before? Ruan knows what I'm talking about, we have seen the photos :lol:

That was done on purpose, but have had plenty of spiders, especially pokies, running laps on me.

The majority of the times have been during mating attempts. Once the pokie males mate, they tend to hit the road at speed.
Often had to call the wife to ask where the spider was sitting on my back. She tells me, then closes the door behind her when she leaves me to my devices.
Just try not to accidentally pinch them when they are sitting on you, as that usually ends in a bite report.

Advice? Yes. Your wife. If she ever asks you for something, give it to her. No questions.
