Hi, iv'e got a brachypelma albopilosum I bought from huzi a couple of weeks ago and it was really fat and immobile so I thought it will be healthier once it molted. Well it started darkening two weeks ago and molted on Saturday. After the molt it started darkening again and is now as dark as it was just before it molted. Is it normal and is it possible that it can be in pre-molt agian after such a short period of time?

Note; the abdomen is still very large after the molt, not tiny as is normal after a molt. I also needed to help him remove the exuvium after the molt as it was still atached and he could not get it of by himself.

How big is the spider?

Normally spiders get sluggish and don't move a lot closure to molting and after a molt.
They spider might just have hardened, gone darker back to the normally colour of the spider!
Post pictures though of abdomen.


Your humidity was not right if you had to help remove the molt.,
But it does happen that the molts get stuck.

I wouldn't worry too much, My B. Albopilosum (+/- 5Cm) moulted recently as well and I experienced similar symptoms.(Mine was also rather 'fat' before the moult) Also darkened up quite a bit (after 2-3 days), in fact looks almost black now aside from lighter coloration around the edges of the carapace.

+1 to check your humidity levels

Give it a week to harden up (How big is it?) and see if it will take some food afterwards.

Check for any leaks where you assisted in removing the exuvium and if all looks good and it takes to food I'd say it should be fine

I did not sell you a brachypelma albopilosum (curly hair) ..I sold you a brachypelma albiceps (golden red rump)it was quite plump as it was expecting a molt soon ..they do get slugish befor a molt ,if the T is gone dark it could be showing its normal colors ,which is black with a golden carapace ,with regard to the exuvium getting stuck it could be your humidity was a bit low ,it has always molted fine with me

How big is this monster?

Use Diagonal Leg Span (DLS), the distance from the tip of one front leg to the tip of the rear leg on the opposite side when the tarantula is resting in a normal posture.

@ huzi, sorry I meant albiceps. Don't know why I said albopilosum, just a mistake.

I'll post a pic on the weekend. It's completly dark. Maybe it will start lightening in a few days.
The humidty is very high or I asume it is. I do not own a humidity meter as of yet but I can see and smell the humidity is high there are even droplets forming underneath the t.

When I assisted the molt I may have acted too quickly but the t was not harmed. No leaks or wound etc. but some hairs might be missing in a small area. I do not want to feed it because it is so large and I'm afraid he might become as fat as he was although he is still very big but I gave him a small cricket last night and saw him feeding this morning. He has got more energy since the molt but is still quite sluggish.

Just to verify, they can't actually molt a week or to after a previous molt, or can they? (it is about 4 to 5 cm)
