As someone new to the hobby, who waited two months after getting my first T (Curly) before committing to the next 8, and absorbing everything I could about them in that time, I would say it did strike me as a little..odd.

Well, sometimes it happens, and sometimes it doesn't. Most humans simply aren't built to do much advance planning. Once they get a dog in heat, or a pair of hamsters, etc. they just let Mother Nature take its course. Maintaining the quality of the breed doesn't occur to them. What will happen to the offspring is simply not an issue in the heat of the moment. MANY OF US BREED THE SAME WAY WITH THE SAME LACK OF FORETHOUGHT OR ADVANCE PLANNING!

Perhaps you're expecting too much of the masses. Perhaps our species hasn't evolved to the point where such conduct is even on the menu. While your questions and concerns are indeed laudable, even justified, the majority of the rest of our species has yet to reach that level of sophistication. Sorry for the bad news.

"How much do the more common species of tarantulas cost (for comparison)?"

For example, in the USA (where I am now, specifically Texas) a Chilean rose (G. rosea) retails for about US $25, spiderling redknees (B. smithi) sell for maybe US $50. Most pet shops sell TKG3 for about US $22.95.
