It seems that the males of fast-growing species generally live for shorter after maturing than those that take years and years to mature.
For breeding I'd highly recommend males that have moulted out as recently as possible, for age will have a negative effect on their sperm quality (and thus the amount of fertilised eggs), and eventually of their ability to creat sperm webs at all.
