that actually sounds like i awesome idea. we as members of the forum should try and do something about. would be cool to have our own society.

If I remember correctly, this used to be similar to the hunter's association where you gain specific legal benefits from being a member. This was / is a paid membership.
I know that it used to make it easier to obtain permits for keeping local species easier as well, but since this has been changed recently, it is kind of pointless I guess.

But maybe someone that was acutally a member might have more information. If I remember correctly, Ceratogyrus was a member and had/has a permit for local baboon spiders.
