I agree, rather save up for something better.
Can't go wrong with a Canon. It is popular and 2nd lenses are easy to come by.
If your intent on getting one now though try a Fujifilm S series
I have a Fujifilm Finepix S5700 ( quite an old model), it is not bad. It has Macro and super macro functions but it only uses auto focus which can be frustrating at times, especially when you want to focus on something through glass.
It is not SLR either, so the image sensor is smaller and picks up a lot of noise with night time photography. The newer S series cams are much better
