Hello all

Question is Mould and fungi dangerous for tarantulas? what wood should be used in cages to prevent this, some woods mould while others dont? is this true?

I think mould and fungi would be hazardous to T's. And yes some wood would mould rather than other. Most Tarantula setups are ideal environments for moulds and fungi to grow due to the humidity and a certain degree of ventilation/draft. I believe cork bark is not as vulnerable to these growths as other wood.

I believe many people trust in cooking or boiling rocks and wood prior to placing it in enclosures, although I've still seen growths in certain barks.

I've also heard that cedar should not be used in enclosures as they have or are natural insectisides.

I honestly do not know. I have seen a topic or two regarding this on here before, I however don't know if there was any answer. I have used a piece of drift wood in my P. Irmina setup, and after two weeks at 85 deg humidity have witnessed no foreign growth. Although I cannot guarantee that nothin will happen, and drift wood is not that cheap either. :(

If i remember correctly from previous thread or two the people mentioned virgin cork bark, but that it's very expensive and hard to find.
I don't think fungi can grow on ocean drift wood. If it was in the water long enough then every bit of it will have been salted, and that salt is still part of the dried out piece of wood.
