One can only sigh...

As the Tarantula hobby in SA creeps forward at a snails pace, the slime seems to precede the snail... Baboons??? What Baboons???

Most people are like clouds. The sun comes out when they f*ck off...

Can you keep locals if they were bred in captivity if they were infact bred by a permit holder? cos i really think our local Ts are awesome..

Hey Shaunlventer, I dont know of anyone that has got a permit to breed locals in captivity, as far as I know it is not allowed.

They way I understand it, is that Nat Con doesn't allow someone to release local baboons into the wild, so they wont allow breeding. If they do the existing permit wont cover a couple of hundred extra spiders, plus you cant release or sell them............. so breeding isn't allowed in captivity.

Maybe someone has got a permit for breeding, if somebody claims to have one and wants to give you a "captive bred" local baboon spider, please cover your ass and insists on seeing his permit for keeping, breeding and trading. To my knowledge that should be 3 different permits.

I am trying to get all the info on permits ready, waiting for all the updates from Nat Con and as soon as I have it, I will post it on the forum.

Hope this helps. :)

What I would really like to know is why when a
sensitive question pops up on the forum, it all
goes up in flames.

Do you really have to go at arms length and
start fight amoungst the member that know
something of something. Why don't you get
together and share experiences and try and figher
out what you might have missed and done different when you tried putting in a aplication. And hopefully getting these permits that you want

Not to get caught in a flame war, but has anyone had a look , and made heads or tales of the national biodiversity act no 10 of 2004 ?

They have several lists of endangered, and prohibited alien species on there (list 2: www.info.gov.za/view/DownloadFileAction?id=98581 )

It has most of the "hobby" tarantulas listed as prohibited, with a class regarding how they see it (classes 1a,1b, 2,3 ) may be kept without permit, needs permit, may only be kept in certain places, may not be kept)..

And then KZN has another flavour of this list with a completely different classification structure which is not nicely set out for normal people to understand..

can anyone make heads out of this ?
The baboons from further north in africa are not listed ( but in the list of critically endangered species it lists the entire Pterinochilus family... so we can assume? we cant keep them.

Is there a gazetted list of species that we can post signed by Marthinus v.S. that does not require reading and cross referencing 20 documents to try and figure out what their classifications mean and what they actually mean ?

any law wise people here who can dissect acts and bills ?

At leas that link can then be put under the rules section so the forum has a reference to a gazette which hopefully will sort out some confusion..

Wow, I can't believe I wasted my time reading all that. Just want to point out one small thing.

Taki wrote: IF and only IF they ignore the POLITE warning/heads up, then message any of the admins, myself or Dimitri and they will be banned with immediate effect.
The same goes for people using common names instead of scientific names, let the person know POLITELY in a private msg or on the thread.

Does that mean if someone constantly uses common names and not scientific names they'll get banned? That seems rather harsh to me, not everyone knows the scientific names or at least I don't but yet, I try and i spend 20 minutes trying to make a post by googling the names before I post so that people don't flame me about it.

Just a small note, almost every person I've dealt with regarding Tarantula's, pet shops, online sellers, friends or even the people I've met from the forums use common names. Only person who used scientific names was Scarab when I met him :) Scarab for president :D
