Why not just use the seller/review threads to set up a breeder list added to the breeding reports pages?
If anyone has dealt with someone and is happy with them they would have put a review up there.

As for not flooding the market, that is easier said than done.
The site has a small percentage of South African tarantula collectors on. Lots of these guys that are off the site could be breeding species that are not on your "flooded list" and maybe one sac from that species from someone on here could "flood" it?
Added to that, if 5 guys on here have pairs of a certain species (And all are on the "approved list"), who decides which of those people are allowed to breed? What if only 2 of those people then attempt to breed them and both fail (Breeding spiders is not an exact science)?
Some species could also take over a year to drop a sac, so who would be able to tell if the market can handle them in a years time? Anyone with a crystal ball here?

Then someone mentioned taking breeders off the list if their prices are too high. What is too high and who decides that? I might think that metallica's are worth R300 each, but someone else would pay R1800 for them easily without skipping a beat. I just sold 4 regalis sub adult females for R250 a piece, so I might consider anyone selling regalis for higher than that a rip off.

I voted against the idea, because this has been discussed in the past many a time before (On other groups) and it had the same outcome. A small site like this will have no real grunt in the overall hobby (I personally managed to sell more of my down scaling collection in the past 2 weeks on a facebook page than on here).
I know guys like Petbugs/Tarantula cafe/MrTarantula have the best sales of tarantulas in SA compared to other breeders on here. Will they stick to the "rules" if their target markets don't frequent this site (Even though they as breeders are part of this site and will advertise on here)? They are making a living off of their spiders, so is it fair that they are taken off the approved breeder list for breeding a spider considered to be flooded? Do they get first option to breed them, and everyone else must wait in line?
Other than the approved breeding list (Which you can get from the breeder review section), I think the idea is a bit too optimistic and personally think you will alienate more people and decrease the member (breeder) numbers on here.

but I think to answer your main point, this will never curb who breeds what, but will make breeders more accountable for THIS site only. If breeders are on our list that are not from this site, that's fine too. Our aim is not to target the whole of South Africa initially, but to at least make a start. I've been in the hobby for 4 years now, and I only buy from people like you, Creator, Scarab and very few others because I simply don't trust anyone else. And if there is a list on this site that will help me broaden my supplier base of trusted/known individuals, I think it's still a benefit. Again I say even if it's just for this site.

Prices, numbers of spiders being bred etc, will never be fully controlled. I just believe making a start is better than doing nothing. And who knows where it goes.

Listen, I'm also going to clarify that I'm not a prophet for this initiative but I'm just putting down my 2c worth of how I see it working. It was just a suggestion that seems to have taken off pretty well - so there must be some merit or usefulness in doing something like this.

From a consumer point of view I'm all for it. Why not have another database of information hopefully from people I know and trust already to help make a decision. But, then as Cerat said: "Why not just use the seller/review threads to set up a breeder list added to the breeding reports pages?"

Seeing as I have no interest in breeding for any other reason other than experiencing my hobby and animals to the fullest this won't really affect me.

I will say this though. Once you start trying to dictate the activities of people trying to run a business you are going to piss people off and alienate them. That coupled with the persons not connected to this forum and it's activities in any way would mean that the actual effect this type of thing would have on the market will be minimal if any. Is it really worth the effort and trouble?

Valid points and from my point of view this hobby needs a place where you can find out who keeps what and where you can get what.
It will make things simpler for newbies, have you had a look at some of the topics currently, asking exactly this.

The more info the better especially for newbies.
