I have a P. Formosa sling in a small glass arboreal enclosure. It had a piece of cork bark that developed white specks of mold. So I removed the cork bark and replaced it with new substrate and a piece of mopanie wood. ...

Mold, in and of itself, is seldom a problem. Its greatest importance is that wherever mold can grow so can all sorts of other far more dangerous things. That's why almost all the "Old Hands" in the hobby keep their tarantulas' cages as dry as the tarantulas can tolerate. (Just be certain to supply water dishes.) For about 90% of the kinds in captivity that amounts to pretty much a desert cage. Years and years of experience have clearly demonstrated that almost all tarantulas are even better at adjusting to arid environments than we are.

Thanks for all the help.

What I did was clean the entire enclosure. I washed the piece of wood with boiling water and placed it in the oven till bone dry. I also dried out some peat a bit.

I must say the little Formosa gave me no trouble when I moved it back and forth. Almost like s/he knew what was up.

I think pokies don't deserve there agro rep.

Hi,
when I started with T's I had a mold issue with my B.Albo. (I'm still new in this hobby)
Tried a lot of things until I noticed a small spec of mold between the silicon and glass in one corner of the enclosure, I changed to a new enclosure and all was well.
I cleaned, sun-baked and re-used that enclosure later and had mold again so I got rid of it.
Seems that if there are spores stuck somewhere it will start again doesn't matter what you do.
I also found the enclosures with the supawood lids to be troublesome w.r.t. mold, allways for me, I stopped using them.

Just another tip.

you said that you used the peat straight form the bag. in my experience peat straight from the bag is normally too dry. As soon as I get a bag of peat i dry it in the oven until completely dry and then add that to my T enlocsures. the older T's can really handle dryer conditions as long as you add a water bowl. with the slings i make the peat slightly damp (about half as damp as the peat comes in the bag)and i have stopped having issues with mold!
