Always wanted to keep a few real spiders in my room for show, because all the big Ts are in their own room. Just have to find some nice ones first....

I would recommend:
Rain spider - around 3 years lifespan and grow nice and big
Velvet spider - Live for up to 8 years, make cool webs and good eaters
Jumping spiders - Good hunters - A bit on the small side though for most people.
Wolf spiders - Great hunters
Button spiders - Great hunters as well and very easy to keep.

I've kept rainspiders before. Haven't seen a button spider in ages. Ye jumping spiders are a tad too small. Would love a wolf spider and a velvet spider, must go looking now that I'm on holidays :)

Thanks koad for the thread. Its made me look at locals from a different perspective.

Thanks Cerat for the info. Your insight always amazes me. I hope to see your collection of local balloons one day and drink a black label with you boet.

I used to keep L.geometricus when I were younger. Enjoyed feeding them!
One question: Why are they called 'true spiders'?

As you might know, but for anyone that does not know about the physical differences:

"The Araneomorphae are a suborder of spiders. They are distinguished by having fangs that oppose each other and cross in a pinching action, in contrast to the Mygalomorphae (tarantulas and their close kin), which have fangs that are nearly parallel in alignment." "In Araneomorphae, the fangs slope towards each other, giving these spiders many more possibilities than Mygalomorphae, which can only bite top down. Unlike Mygalomorphae, which can live for up to 25 years, most Araneomorphae die after about a year." ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Araneomorphae ) But what it comes down to is Araneomorphae are called True Spiders, the reason? no idea...
