It's really an entertaining read whenever OBT's are mentioned. It is very understandable that "activists" (of which I can declare myself one as well) gets worked up about topics like this. My knowledge is much more weighed in the favor of herpetology than entomology, but granted, if exotic T's are released into the wild it most likely will have very detrimental effect on our local fauna. As mentioned before, iguana's, Burmese pythons and now reticulated pythons are wreaking havoc on the natural fauna of the US. Whenever an outside species have been introduced to a new ecosystem in the past, it made local fauna as well as flora suffer tremendously, of which I can use cane toads on Australia as an example.
Ecosystems are balanced by nature, and whenever a new species is introduced, it upsets that balance. Eat and be eaten, thats the way of the wild, and the new species may for example have different defense strategies, for which the predator of would be similar prey have not evolved.
I used to own a lot of exotic snakes, most of which I am positive would thrive the area where I live in the wild (Limpopo bosveld). I have personally found what I first perceived as an african rock python, only to realize it's a Burmese. This was while hunting near the Botswana border. So there are invasive species already loose in our ecosystem, I have personally experienced it. We can do all the environmental impact assessments, risk assessments and analysis we want (I do this for a living), but in the end invasive species WILL have a negative impact on our fauna and flora.
Why anyone would want to release something like an OBT into the wild is really beyond me. It's like the person who introduced hyacinths into our river systems. Such people should be "introduced into the wild", preferably in the Kruger National park near the Mozambican borders so the lions can deal with them....
