The exotic pet trade contributes to jobs and cash generated, either via the pets the pet foods feeders and so on cages implements used in cages. Also the scope is much larger, looking at the people supplying the materials etc. So not just bio impacts, but social impacts can also be drawn upon. Its a huge industry that will surely suffer, so instead of job creation, something as simple as this causes job losses is the government going against its own views now ? Since if feeders get banned, it will impact not just the hobby but hobby suppliers.
In theory yes, in practice they will try to invoke the "precautionary principle', and try to slip it through that way.
I got the impression that the people from NatCon responsible for this peice of legislation hadnt really got to grips with the larger implications when asked questions at the meeting on Friday.
We could actually argue this very well, the procedures haven't been followed. Precautionary principle applies only if there are previous studies or proof of such, I'd bet the appropriate professionals in the field haven't been asked for their input as well. As for the broader impact, that should be a huge part of this. I can see a few loopholes, we must exploit them. Since their homework wasn't done, they should be reprimanded so to say.
I couldnt agree more, and I suspect that is why this has been "re-opened" for public comment to try and avoid the fallout that will definately come from this when it is passed.
That's if we want to keep a listed alien species, so that's after passed ? But to pass a law, you must have an impact study to justify either the law or amendment thereof.
