i always use the scientific way to determine sex.......i ask them if they want some!!!

ok ok ok....just kidding...you put a model Bike in the one corner of the enclosure and a mirror in the other corner....give them 5 minutes

the males will be at the Bike and the females will be at the Mirror (wel ok...mostly females) and Frootbat will be stuck in the middle not being able to decide!!

Since Scarab bought her that nice Big Bike the mirrors have become much less inciting!....and her Big Bike has got Big Mirrors any way!

If you are referring to me, I didn't say that a 8cm G.rosea can't possibly have hooks, just said that it might not have yet, so not an accurate way to sex.

This is like watching survivor with all the adverts in between.

There are only a few ways that I can think of and I think Onyx is talking about the "erect" (with reference to the earlier post on peckers), fusulae or tiny spinnerets that can be found on the mid-ventral abdominal area (basically around the epigastric furrow) of a male T. The epiandrous glands also seem more positioned so that a male can easily cast a sperm web with the side to side motion of the abdomen.

Also, one a male the setae or "hairs" around the epigastric furrow can be identified to be shorter in the concentrated area of the epigastric furrow, giving the effect of the small "U" shape which is easily seen on Poecilotheria sp. Whereas the "hairs" on a female in this area will be more even in length all the way across, and the "U" shape is far larger, more like \_/ in shape. lol.

This is as far as my learning/knowledge goes, and even this is not a sure fire way or fool proof way of identifying a male at a small size or young age from the outside.

There is a reason that they saying goes: Ventral sexing = BS

Well lets hope that Onyx has a better, full proof way to sex tarantulas than ventral sexing.
