That is the aim yes. They are IDEAL "starter" spiders, at least so in SA because they can handle a very wide range of temperatures and almost demand dry conditions. They just do not die that easily, are mildly tempered when treated with respect. They web spectacular nests, eat anything and are breathtaking to look at.

The female rarely becomes visible, probably to busy doing the dishes...

When I do see her, it is usually with a few of her surrogates, just freaken stunning to watch...



The young ones have their usual afternoon routine, coming out into the webbing for whatever reason. Mostly only three or four, today they were all out, although not all visible in the picture. They are about 3cm leg span, and most look a bit dull and will probably molt soon. The "red" ones are still red, the one third from the left seems to be a little runt...



The other five will probably mature by the beginning of 2013, then the fun will start...

An incredible beautiful communal to say the least, and now the extreme rare sight of seeing the female, what more could a person ask for.

I have a question concerning the ritual of the slings. Could this be the slings trying to collect "insects that might have been caught in the webbing or collecting of dew/fog that might be at the entrance of the burrow, if they where at Socotra in the wild"?
