Yup, a Curly. So there is always room for one more :) But it's true, certain species are WAAAAY over stocked at the moment, funny enough the Lasiodora Parahybana has not made the list? They produce thousands of eggs at at time.

I did have the idea of approaching schools and asking them if they want to make keeping a tarantula a part of Biology studies. We can donate all the T's to the kids and they get to take them home when the curriculum ends. Will create a positive boost in the hobby and educate lots of people that are otherwise terrified of spiders. They would only need to raise crickets or roaches as feeders, any that's EASY if every kid just brings a few veggie scraps to school once a week.

Just an idea to answer the topic :)

I have been warning people for a while about breeding spiders like P.fasciata.
The way I see it, either keep them together till the numbers drop, or else see if Europe wants them. Not sure what postage will cost, but you might get lucky and find someone willing to buy the spiders up north.

Hetero, you are not far from an idea I'm already one step ahead. The personal and even the headmaster at my boy's school calls me Spiderman. They asked me to do a talk to the grade 7 classes about the Ts, since it seems it is their curriculum. The kids so badly wanted to buy a starter T, but at the time there were very few 'Curlies' (B. Albopilosum, sorry could not resist :D) However they want me back next year and there is even a possibility to visit some other local schools.

Next year I will be ready with some B. Albopilosums and even help them with a class project to take care of one. I do have concerns that for some it will be just a phase, but there will be some that will likely grow a love for them. In the end it is about education and getting people to look past the Doom can and see the spider on their ceiling as something other than a pest.

My kids will grow up respecting nature way more than the child with a slipper nearby. ;)

I'm sorry to be the negative person here but as far as the whole Tarantulas for kids in school thing goes, I think it's a great idea but my only concern is what about the parents who won't allow it, won't we be isolating those children and exposing them to disappointment and taunting from fellow classmates? I know it sounds silly but high school is difficult enough without one more reason to be the odd kid out.

If you have to much stick them into a container together and sell the Tarantlas that walk out of the container,or just stick them into the fridge!

If you did the breeding for the experience then culling them should not be an issue!
If you did the breeding for the money and the experience then you have to deal with the surplus of slings in your care until sold.Bring your prices down to a steal and a give away. pick 6 people on the site and say you want to gie them a couple of sling for free they just have to collect or pay for postage, people will not turn down free spiders!

I had some complain that the Auction was causing the prices of spiders to drop, but I don't think this is the issue, I think it is all the people breeding the spiders and flooding the market!

I see your concern, but kids are tough and they get over curtain issues, school is tough but we can't shield kids from every thing in life, they need to learn how to deal with disappointment and curtain feelings that come from being a child it is parents job to give the child the "ego" to deal with a**hole kids!
At the end of the day it is the parents who choose to be bad parents and shoot there kids dreams down or they know best and they know what there child is able to do.

I was not allowed to watch curtain movies or kids programs growing up, where all my friends wore aloud to watch movies and stuff like that, I was the odd one out most of the time, when they wore talking about the movies, but at the end of the day I knew the whole movie any way  !!
I use to get hectic night terrors  :S

I was only allowed to get a snake until I turned 12, on my 12 birthday went and got my snake Guess who was the only one with snakes in my class room! ME!!!! :cheer:
At the end of the day parents know best, and they love us, whether they said no to getting a spider!
You just move out and buy your self one then!
