The bigger picture is that the issue at hand is an animal rights issue!!! Its been stirred by organizations like the NSPCA whose stated aim in accordance with their foreign donors is that no animal may be kept in captivity. And yes one of their people told me quite proudly that includes tarantulas.
They push their agendas in through the backdoors like with a few nuts in Natal.
Worried about the introduction of foreign species please!!!!! Every day thousands of containers carrying myriads of critters land in our ports.GM brings in containers direct from Brazil,how many little bugs get off!!!!
Conservation sanctioned the game industry and even helped to develop an industry that has spread exotic game species right throughout the country.
Who introduced trout and bass which have decimated our indigenous fish species???? Conservation of course.
What some people need to do is wake up and realise that our hobbies/pursuits are under threat and just be that more aware of what we do and say in public.
At the moment we also need to be aware that there is a move afoot to have a new national environmental bill.This will bring all provinces in line which could be very negative if Natal gets this through.
I have seen all the sports I enjoy under attack fireams the new gun laws,gundogs the NSPCA,vets stopping the docking of working dogs tails,totally ridiculous conservatoin regs and hunting seasons the list goes on...

I personally don't know what to think of "Conservation entities".

My husband's uncle has a game farm on the Botswana border in Limpopo. About 2 years ago an elephant crossed the border and ended up on his farm in SA. He tried everything he could to get the elephant back to Botswana, but the "Conservation authorities" said that they do not allow an animal like that back into Botswana.

In the end, they were more than happy to give him a permit to shoot the elephant, even after he offered to pay all the fees applicable to get the elephant back to Botswana....

How does that work?????

None of you can say that we are doing a fantastic job trying to safe T's.

Now, do any of you have a list form what Trantula you bred for where? Or do we all just advertise that we have a MM or MF, and work form there? I think the concern should be about inbreeding?


@Cenotaph, That specific elephant was shot because it was a mature bull breaking fence lines! If you know of any fence lines that can keep a bull in must out, please let the rest of all us insignificant game farms and national parks know. You will solve a big problem!! And then we will never have to resort to shoot again. But hey, it is so easy to criticise when you have no inclination of what the hell will happen.
So, you could have paid for everything (so noble) but the fact remains, he would have done it again and again and again!
But, if you wold like to take Nature conservation out, please let me know I have dates times and addys of place that have recently shot elephants and other animals for the same reason. Then you can feel a bit more justified about your Trantulas.
Ps. why do you think PTA Zoo can't cope with the amount of T's? Maybe Because the demand is so high???
